国際理解親善：Halloween Project

留学生カシラス・カタリナさんを迎えて「Pumping Carving」についてお話しながら昼食交流会を開きました。毎年10月31日に行われる、古代ケルト人が起源と考えられているお祭です。もともとは秋の収穫を祝い、悪霊などを追い出す宗教的な意味合いのある行事であったが、現代では特にアメリカ合衆国で民間行事として定着しています。カボチャの中身をくりぬいて「ジャック・オー・ランタン(Jack-o’-lantern)」を作って飾ったり、子どもたちが魔女やお化けに仮装して近くの家々を訪れてお菓子をもらったりする風習などがあることで知られています。米国出身のバクロス先生も加わり、ご家庭での写真を見せながらプレゼンをしていただきました。英語での質問で盛り上がる一時を過ごしました。留学生を通じて違った文化を知り、お互いを尊重する精神を養う機会となりました。

姉妹校展示ブースに日本産のかぼちゃで作成して「ジャック・オー・ランタン」を展示して米国姉妹校交流２０周年をお祝いしました。２年生と留学生がひとつのチーム「ワンチーム」を作り、プロジェクトモチーフとして伝統的なもの、現代的なもの、レッドクロスの活動であることを要素に話し合い続けました。デザインシンキング(Design thinking)という手法を使いプロジェクトを推進しました。異文化でのコミュニケーション、プロジェクトの意義、プロトタイプの作成、検証と進んでいきました。イギリス出身のＡＬＴマラン先生からのアドバイスも加わりました。生徒達からは日本文化「Hello Kitty」赤十字「けんけつちゃん」等のイメージもありました。姉妹校クローバーヒル高校のデゥリビノ先生からも今回のプロジェクトのヒントをいただきまました。多くの人の知恵を集めて、発信することで人と人との豊かな交流が生まれます。

     We are celebrating sister school relationships on Halloween here! Our Japanese pumpkin has grown enough to carve, with a smiling Hello Kitty face on it. Through these international relationships we can learn about different aspects of other countries and respect each other as friends.

     The Junior Red Cross (JRC) held a lunch exchange and invited our international student Catalina Casillas to talk about carving pumpkins. On the 31st October every year, the festival ‘Halloween’ is held and is believed to originate from ancient Celtic tradition. Originally, it was a religious event that celebrated the autumn harvest and chased away evil spirits, but has since become a popular event, especially in the United States. It is now custom to hollow out and decorate pumpkins to make ‘Jack-o’-Lanterns’ and to dress up in outfits like witches or ghosts and visit nearby houses to get sweets or candy. I wish that I could get some too! Ms. Sara Bachouros, our teacher from the United States, also gave a presentation and showed some of her Halloween pictures from home. It looked like a lot of fun, and perhaps next year we should spend Halloween at Sara’s! It looks very exciting! The experience was an opportunity to learn different cultures through interactions with international students and to develop a spirit a respecting one another’s cultures.

     We were able to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our sister school exchange by creating a pumpkin made in Japan, displayed at the sister school exhibition table in the languages corridor! At first we formed one team of second-year students and an international student and as project motifs continued to discuss the elements of tradition, contemporary, and Red Cross activities. The project was promoted using a technique called design thinking. We proceeded with cross-cultural communication, project significance, prototype creation, and reflection. Our ALT from the United Kingdom, Mr. Joseph Mullan, also gave us some guidance on the project. We also used images from Japanese ‘Cool Japan’ culture, Hello Kitty, and the Red Cross’ Kenketsu-chan. Mr. Davide D’Urbino of our sister school, Clover Hill High School, also gave us some much-needed hints for this project, so thank you to him too!

Receiving and conveying the wisdom of many creates a rich exchange between people.
